Design for Social Change
Christopher Robbins: June 6th D4SC Meeting
Empire Drive In, Todd Chandler & Jeff Stark
Todd Chandler and Jeff Stark presented Empire Drive In at D4SC on March 28, 2011.
Summary: Empire Drive-In is a large-scale multimedia installation and programming platform built out of used and salvaged materials, first constructed in 2010 for the 01SJ Biennial in San Jose, California. At its simplest Empire is a drive-in movie theater made out of wrecked cars and a 40-foot screen constructed of salvaged wood. Audiences climb in and out of 25 junked cars to watch films projected on the big screen. Low-power radio transmits audio directly to each car.
Caloris Basin by Jamie Oshea
Jamie presented his Caloris Basin project to D4SC on February 28th.
Summary: The Caloris Basin is a device that cooks food and boils water using only concentrated sunlight. The first prototype was hot enough to perform any frying, to operate a pressure cooker, and to boil sufficient quantities of water for drinking. The system used $20.78 in material from US hardware stores, a material cost that could easily be brought down to $5. Constructing a basin takes a day of semi-skilled labor in situ and requires yearly maintenance.

Weeels, Inc. is a transportation solutions company that builds software and systems to increase the efficiency of the for-hire vehicle industry.
In April 2004, Weeels released a beta version of it's ride sharing software for which enabled smart-phone users in NYC to compare itineraries and opt in to sharing livery cab rides.
Currently Weeels is pursuing relationships with business and academic insitutions, where it is building smaller pockets of compliance, in close knit (socially), dense (geographically), communities.
